Are there any famous land surveyors? |
There have been many famous surveyors in Canada. In the 19th Century, David Thompson opened out new trade routes through the unknown passes of the Canadian Rockies. Sir Sandford Fleming’s work resulted in our present twenty-four hour system of time zones. There have been many others and you can read about them here. |
In the United States, presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Abraham Lincoln had all been land surveyors before starting their political careers.Lewis & Clark and Mason & Dixon (The Mason-Dixon Line) were also surveyors. In Hollywood, actors Val Kilmer (The Ghost and the Darkness), Brad Pitt (Seven Years in Tibet) and even John Wayne (The Fighting Kentuckian) have played surveyors in the movies. We don’t often hear about land surveyors in the news in Canada. That is because land surveyors have done their job so that all of us can peacefully enjoy our land secure in knowing where our boundaries are. However, there are times when neighbours do get into disputes over boundaries or even countries can’t agree on the location of their boundaries and these events will make the news.
