Teacher Resources

I am a teacher. What resources are available to me and my students?

Alberta Land Surveyors are often available to come to schools to speak to interested students. Contact a local surveyor or the Alberta Land Surveyors’ Association to have someone come out to your school.

Due to resource shortages, not all requests can be accommodated but we will try our best!

The most successful career presentations have been to small classes or groups of students who have expressed a possible interest in a surveying or geomatics careers and are enrolled in the Pure Math stream.

The Alberta Land Surveyors’ Association has a brochure and poster available for free to anyone who requests it. The brochure highlights the tremendous opportunities available to anyone who wishes to pursue a career in the land surveying profession. Contact us at 1-800-665-2572 or info@alsa.ab.ca to your brochures.

The Alberta Land Surveyors’ Association has teamed up with the Science Alberta Foundation to create Made to Measure – a series of seven activities that teaches kids to use problem solving skills and other math concepts to explore Alberta past and present through the eyes of a land surveyor.

Made to Measure is aimed at Grade 8 students in Alberta and can be ordered directly from Science Alberta.

Geocaching (pronounced geo-cashing) is a worldwide game of hiding and seeking treasure. A geocacher can place a geocache in the world, pinpoint its location using GPS technology and then share the geocache's existence and location online. Anyone with a GPS device can then try to locate the geocache. (Source: www.geocaching.com)

Almost to the End of Your Journey
The Geographic Center of Alberta was determined by accurate measurements of the latitude and longitude of the borders of the province. It was located equidistant from each of the straight-line border segments to the NORTH, SOUTH, EAST, and WEST.

This is an Ammo Can placed not too far from the Center of Alberta Cairn. Hopefully this will encourage you to go find this amazing place. Inside this Geocache you will find a few items related to land surveying. Please feel free to grab an item or two and be sure to leave a note in the log book.Wear good footwear if you are walking, preferably rubber boots in the summer as there is usually a lot of water and muskeg in this area.

Information about ALSA cache can be viewed at http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GC1G529.  You will note that you have to be a member of www.geocaching.com to view the full details (coordinates, etc.) of the geocache.
