their educational skills to a wide variety of surveying disciplines.
Land surveyors are involved in oil field work, land-use planning
and development and in other related activities involving the
determination of property boundaries or assembly and analysis of land
related information.
It is an exciting career of changing technology, computers and satellites.
In this career, computer literacy is essential. Strong math
skills, an interest in sciences are important assets. Land surveyors
also usually have an interest in the law, history and business.
"I chose Geomatics because I enjoy working with computers. In this
area, I will be working with the most current technologies and
theories. I want something that is always looking to the future." —
University of Calgary student
Surveyors work throughout the world on projects varying from
mapping the Himalayas to aligning the Chunnel connecting France and
England!
Changing technology, computers, and satellites combine to create a
new frontier in boundary determination and measurement. A career in
geomatics and cadastral surveying can lead to the professional
designation of Alberta Land Surveyor.
Land surveying is a recognized profession just like architecture,
engineering, law, and medicine. No person except an Alberta Land
Surveyor may practice land surveying in the province. Registration and
certification to practice land surveying in Alberta is governed by the
Land Surveyors Act which is administered by the Alberta Land Surveyors'
Association.
This is a career for those who want to apply their professional and
technical skills in the outdoors. Surveyors are not desk-bound. They
can spend as much time outdoors as they do indoors.
"I love it-the outdoors, the physical work and a profession always
in demand. The Alberta Land Surveyors' Association is not a stuffy
group of professionals-it is people who are proud of their profession
but still like to have fun-it's great to be a member!" - ALSA member
