The Alberta Land Surveyors' Association (ALSA) expresses its heartfelt gratitude for the privilege to live, work, and gather on the ancestral and contemporary territories of diverse Indigenous peoples who have nurtured and protected this land for generations.
As a province-wide organization, we serve the lands known as Alberta, spanning the territories of Treaties 4, 6, 7, 8, and 10, as well as the Métis Settlements and the Six Regions of the Métis Nation of Alberta within the Métis Homeland. We acknowledge that these lands have been the ancestral and contemporary home and travelling ground of the Niitsitapi, nêhiyawak, Dene, Nahkawininiwak, îyârhe Nakodabi, the Métis, as well as many other Indigenous Peoples.
In our work, we strive to honour the spirit and intent behind the treaties governing this land. These treaties were established to outline the rights, obligations, and benefits of the signing parties, based on mutual respect, cooperation, and nation-to-nation relationships between Indigenous groups and the Crown. Their intent was to share the land and resources for present and future generations, lasting "as long as the sun shines, the grass grows, and rivers flow."
The ALSA recognizes the history and impact of colonization on Indigenous Peoples throughout the province, and we value the opportunity to learn from this past as we work towards a more inclusive and equitable future. In our pursuit of reconciliation, we acknowledge our historical role in land development and recognize the significance of the treaties that govern this land. We are dedicated to promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion principles in our work and strive to build respectful relationships with Indigenous Peoples across the province.
This Land Acknowledgement will continue to evolve over time as we learn and grow, reflecting our ongoing commitment to understanding the diverse cultures, histories, and contributions of Indigenous peoples with whom we share these lands. The ALSA encourages its members to join us in actively engaging in the process of reconciliation.
