ALS News - From a Councillor - The Value of Volunteering: Building Our Profession Together

Ryan Dick, ALS

The strength of any professional association lies not just in its mandate or bylaws but in the dedication of its members. For the Alberta Land Surveyors’ Association, volunteering has always been both the foundation on which our profession is built and the fuel that drives its continued progress. Every standard we employ today - from regulatory frameworks to educational standards - can be traced back to the efforts of those who gave their time and expertise to move the practice forward.

Volunteering begins with small steps, often through committee work. These roles are essential, not only for supporting the day-to-day operations of the ALSA but also for helping shape its long-term direction. After committee work, some members may consider serving on Council - taking on a greater role in oversight and strategic guidance. These are not just leadership opportunities - they’re chances to safeguard the public interest while advancing the surveying profession in Alberta.

When the Nominating Committee contacts you, it’s worth seriously considering letting your name stand. Council service offers unique insight into the broader landscape of land surveying, not only provincially but often Canada-wide. You’ll gain valuable governance experience, contribute to meaningful decisions, and collaborate with professionals equally committed to maintaining the integrity of our field. It’s a unique opportunity to deepen your understanding and impact beyond your own day-to-day practice.

Of course, it’s natural to feel some hesitation - especially when it comes to giving a speech at the annual general meeting. But don’t let nerves hold you back. If you’ve attended enough AGMs, you’ll already know that perfection isn’t the standard - authenticity and sincerity are what matter. I’ve heard enough awkward jokes from the podium to assure you: stepping up is more important than delivering a flawless speech. Simply putting your name forward is already a commitment worthy of recognition and appreciation from the membership.

Another common concern is the time commitment. But the reality is far more manageable than many expect. Most committee and Council work can be accomplished with just a few dedicated hours each month. Advances in digital meeting platforms have drastically reduced the need to travel, making it easier than ever to participate from wherever you are. And thanks to the focused stewardship of Executive Director Brian Munday and his staff, meetings are kept efficient and on-point - allowing volunteers to maximize impact without becoming overwhelmed.

As professionals, we all benefit from the legacy of those who came before us. Now, it's our turn to ensure that future surveyors inherit a profession that is strong, forward-thinking, and respected. Consider where your skills and perspective can best support your colleagues. By volunteering, whether on a committee or on Council, you are making a tangible difference - and giving back to those who helped shape the career you value.

Letting your name stand isn't just a personal milestone. It’s a professional statement - and a meaningful investment in the continued excellence of land surveying in Alberta.
