Feedback Wanted - Supervision, Direction & Control – What Does It Mean?

Council is seeking feedback from the ALSA membership on a “supervision, direction and control” working paper.

The working paper is available here. Please submit any comments to Executive Director Brian Munday by February 13, 2026.

This working paper proposes an ALSA-endorsed interpretation of the phrase “supervision, direction and control,” as referenced throughout various legislation, industry documents and used in Land Titles affidavits for plan registration.

This initiative aims to provide practical guidance to Alberta Land Surveyors in assuming professional responsibility for the supervision, direction and control of various types of surveys, including legacy projects and/or dormant plans.

The goal is to define the ALSA’s expectations regarding what constitutes adequate supervision, direction and control to:
  • support consistent interpretation and application across the profession;
  • provide regulatory clarity for signing plans in non-routine circumstances (e.g., dormant plans, incomplete surveys, incapacitation of surveyor);
  • assist in maintaining registration integrity while allowing for practical completion of legacy work.

The document has also been circulated to the Director of Surveys and Land Titles for comment.
