An Alberta Land Surveyor may apply to Council to cancel their registration as an Alberta Land Surveyor.
Surveyor’s corporations and surveyor’s partnerships may also apply to Council to cancel their permit to practice.
Once Council has cancelled the registration of an Alberta Land Surveyor or the permit of a surveyor’s corporation or surveyor’s partnership, the practitioner is not authorized to engage in the practice of land surveying in Alberta.
In order for the Alberta Land Surveyors’ Association to accept an application for cancellation, the Council must be satisfied that the practitioner has no outstanding issues or concerns that may adversely affect the public.
The Council will also want to know where field notes will be kept and ensure the practitioner has arranged for appropriate professional liability insurance for past acts.
The practitioner will be asked for the effective date of the cancellation. Applications cannot be back-dated.

Instead of making an application to cancel their registration, an Alberta Land Surveyor may prefer to apply to Council to become a retired member. Retired members may not engage in the practice of land surveying.
Click here for information about retired membership.
The application will be reviewed by the Council of the Alberta Land Surveyors’ Association at the meeting following a completed application being received.
A practitioner who applies to cancel their registration as an Alberta Land Surveyor or permit to practice part-way through the year will not have their fees pro-rated.
According to Section 32 of the Land Surveyors Act, “If a registration is cancelled pursuant to section 31 (default of payment of fees or costs or not in compliance with business requirements), the Council may, subject to the regulations and the bylaws, direct the Registrar to reinstate that registration in the applicable register and reissue the certificate, permit or stamp.”
A registration fee must be paid before the certificate or permit is re-issued.
If a person who had previously been registered as an Alberta Land Surveyor wishes to practice again, the person must make an application to the Registration Committee. Click here to learn more.
A complaint may be dealt with by the Alberta Land Surveyors’ Association within one year of the person ceasing to be an Alberta Land Surveyor or corporation ceasing to be a surveyor’s corporation.
An Alberta Land Surveyor’s registration may also be cancelled if the annual fees are not paid by April 30th of each year or if the Discipline Committee so orders.
